Ridley Scott — ALIEN Directors cut

The BigScreen Cinema Guide: Now Showing – Alien (1979) Schedule

What is it with Ridley Scott and his directors cuts. He did several of Blade Runner, now this… I guess it’s just the quest for more money!

How many of these have you seen?

Stupid Computer Tricks

Some fairly common “tricks” in here, some (like win98 installing multiple device drivers), aren’t nessesarily the users fault.

This is my favorite!

What’s the Story on Google (Again)

Google Search: story of matrix

Now I get 3rd ranking on “Story of Matrix”… Oh, yes, and in other news this blog (at last) floated to the top of the google search for my name! Whoopie… now if only whoever owns the Klickety pages would take my profile down!

Customize Mouse Gestures

Oh, well, I thought I had a brilliant idea about customizing Mozilla gestures and adding your won. I was about to write up my idea when I figured it was wise to google for it before I go though all the trouble.

Anyway, I found it has already been done! Oh well, now to figure out how it works.

Would be nice if it could be attached to your short cuts, so instead of having to clutter your browser bars with links you just assign a gesture to every link you regularly go to.

I’m trying to install the Mouse Gestures plugin but it’s just not working… oh well… the “bird” hasn’t been that good to me recently…

Great discussions

So is blogging about my blog fall into the “life” or the “technology” category… I know I’ve been promising to get my categories under control, but just haven’t gotten around to it.

Anyway, I’ve been SUPER busy recently, so it’s been great that you all have been holding the fort, with your discussions, you’re a great bunch! Sol, I especially like how you complain about my blog turning into “yet another tech site” and then at the soonest possiblity post an OT (and debatable flamebaitish) post about Linux. Great stuff!

So if you have a blog, then go ahead and link to me, let me know of your link and I’ll link back! Or blogroll me :)

Firebird, now my default Browser

Mozilla Firebird

After a few frusterations with Mozilla 1.5 (weird pauses), and Stella even mentioning that this latest build was acting weird, I thought it time to switch to firebird.

It’s slick but still doesn’t feel fully mature. Anyway, my wife is the best software tester I know, she’ll let me know very quickly if it’s worth the switch.

Webrings

As you may have noticed, I joined a few webrings. Thought that it would be a nice thing to do, since obviously people are looking for a way to get out of my site, might as well send them somewhere useful :) .

I’m going to get off the blogrolling one, not specific enough. The Homeschool webring is cool though. Will be joining a few more, just for fun!

I started a webring for “Third Culture Kids”. The only contition to getting on the webring is that you have to be (or have been) a “Third Culture Kid” which is someone who has spent most of their formative years in countries outside their country of “origin”. I don’t have a lot of time to cultivate it, so if you have a site that you want listed then tell me. I need to fire up a couple of pages that can be used as home pages for the ring.

What makes a blog popular?

BlogStreet : Blog Tops

What makes a blog drift to the top of these lists? What makes people come to a specific blog, I don’t know why I read the blogs that I do, I guess it’s a ballance between somewhat interesting and continually updated.

Personally, I don’t go for the blogs that have a whole lot of the authors opinions, presented in pages of rants. I read agonist.org because of the content, and the short captions. The other day I landed at what’s-his-name from “Cathedral and the Bazzar”, (quick google) yeh Eric Raymond. I’ve enjoyed his papers on Free Software, but after reading a few of his blog entries, I was somewhat perplexed. For someone to make so much sense when talking about Software development, yet have such misplaced (though obviously well thought through) ideas about religion (he seems to hate it all) was a bit surprising for me. But hey, everyone has a right to their opinion.

Anyway, I was just looking at my stats, and I’ve had about 527 unique visitors this month, accounting for 1729 visits to 6435 pages giving me a total of 11,186 hits, and serving 112mb. That doesn’t sound like much, but when you look at some of these big trafic blogs, that get thousands of hits a day, I don’t want to think about what their bill looks like.

It’s been a VERY hectic day. That’s why I’m sorta just muttering to myself. Sol says that my blog has turned into a regular “Tech Site”. Well, I guess when I’m at the computer that’s what I’m interested in… Anyway, I’m hoping to get more real content here.

Enough rambling for one post ;)

I got Worms!

Sophos virus analysis: W32/Nachi-A

Sorry couldn’t help it… the awesome Antivir, just notified me that I was infected with W32/Nachi.worm. Not even a week after installing win2k.

Hadn’t had a virus/worm for ages (fully patched win98/mozilla) so getting a “not-so-bad” virus was a good reminder to patch myself up to date.

Is Top–Sites.net Legit?

Got this strange message today from Top–Sites.net. Anyone heard anything about them, or know if they are a legitimate search engine?

The email asks you to check your listing on thier site, it’s weird that they would ask permission as most search engines just do it automatically. They also create “reports on your website’s popularity and your server’s uptime.” Netcraft does the uptime bit and they don’t bother with asking permission.

Also they clearly sniff your address out from the site, which isn’t nice. Following is the message.

Free Web Hosting from 1and1

Professional Package @ 1&1 Internet Inc.

It looks like someone might have at last gotten free web hosting right!

I used prohosting a while back, and while the promised totally free hosting, it folded and went ad based soon after I joined.

Of course 1and1 is HUGE, and they are more then able to run this type of promotion, even if it doesn’t actaully end up being profitable. It’s a good way to get the word up and get free advertising from the grassroots people of the internet.

I don’t need space so I’m not signing up, but if anyone does choose to use it please send info about how it works.

Vim as XML editor

Vim as XML Editor: Intro

Again, just using my blog as a place to store links to articles I need to read when I have time.

I should make a seperate category for this… I should make a few more categories for other things when I have time!

- Viper Squad Ten -

I had seen a few posts on Flashblogging, so I decided to participate in the one yesterday, since it was so much easier to do then Flashmobbing, or any other type of Flashing.

The orgainzer was Clear Blue Skies and the victim was Viper Squad Ten.

Nothing really spectacular… not worth the press the previous two got.
