Ooooh, Winamp 5 soooo nice!

Slashdot | Winamp 2 Winamp 3 = Winamp 5!

Arg, presents somewhat of a dillema. Up until now, my favored mp3 player has been zinf. Simply because it was the best friggin mp3 player out there. It is also Free Software, which is a BIG plus.

I would stay with Zinf except that one feature in in Winamp that isn’t in Zinf and that is sorting music by the folder that it’s in. I have all my albums quite well organized in folders, but the mp3s don’t nessisarily have the correct ID3 info, so in the zinf Media manager it sort of mixes them all up.

So Winamp 5 is now on my computer, and I’ll be trying it out. If I like it better then Zinf I will switch completely.

The Zinf project is also a bit dead.

  • I’ve been a loyal Winamp user from version 1. Winamp 3 was nasty though, I reverted back to 2. Apparently a lot of people agreed and W3 thankfully died.

  • Yeh, I was a faithful winamp 2 user too, until I discovered how Zinf catalouged all your music, and made it much more accessable.

I used to be really into remote controls and keyboard shortcuts, and winamp was fantastic with that.

The installed also was different, I hope they release that as well, because it was much more nifty then the old nullsoft installer.

  • Hmm…maybe I’ll check out zinf. Sometimes I just end up using what I’ve always used unless it gives me problems. For ripping I’ve been using EAC forever and I still use the –r3mix setting.

  • Unless you have some sort of “I would sooner die then use non ‘Free Software’” attitude (or if you use Linux), then you might as well do winamp 5.

From what I’ve seen so far it does what it does exceptionally well.

  • I never saw the whole GPL-only as really “free” software. I think I agree more with the BSD license “freedom.”

Since I got my Nomad Juke Box I have always used the creative software. I found it a lot faster then other stuff I have used. But yeh, you got to buy a creative product first.

  • Matthew, for government/university use I think BSD is the best license. But for an individual programmer (me) I think it would be silly to throw away your rights to the program.

Everything I write is free, the little scripts which are handy but I don’t care much about are just chucked into public domain or covered with a BSD license, depending on how I’m feeling at the time. When I do something that takes longer, I protect it with the GPL. It’s the only sensible option.
