Winamp Weirdness — Guru Meditation #0021
Winamp 5 has been doing some weird things this morning. I select a bunch of files and click on the “Play in Winamp” option on my context menu, and it freaks out. It looks like it’s trying to open a instance for winamp for each file in the folder. It does the same when I choose “Enqueue in Winamp”.
Then it give this error in a little box on the screen “Script Failure. Press left mouse button to continue. Guru Meditation #0021. Script fatal Error #############. scripts/configtarget.maki.”
When you do a left mouse button click winamp comes up but looking like 2.x I guess the script that didn’t load up was the fancy new look. Cool to see what’s underneath all that.

Ok, its a missing close quote at the end of the link reference on the first link….don’t worry done it myself many a time.
And thats for the wrong post. See what happens when people don’t pay attention? The above comment belongs on the GTK file selector entry. /me gives up
Got it! Thanks!
Same thing happend to me this morning. Did anyone here ever have an amiga? the box that comes up almost looks exactly like the one that came with the Guru.Meditation Virus. First I was really surprised how that got on my computer, but appearently NullSoft put that in their Program just for the fun of it.
—- that’s what i hope at least. …otherwise medidations infects all *.com files
Kai
Ok, I figured everything out. It’s just a WinAmp-intern script failure. Take a look at “The Jargon Dictionary”
http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/g/guru_meditation.html
Auf wiederseh’n, Kai!
Greetings Kai!
Thanks for dropping by and contributing.
I’ve throughly enjoyed the guys at NullSoft’s work, and sense or humor. They are a fantastic team which has given the internet so much. The most obvious are Winamp, Nullsoft Installer, and Gnutella.
However, Winamp 5 is starting to tire me (too slow to start-up, and a few other annoyances)… I’m on the verge of going back to good old freeamp!
Thanks for the info. I got worried as hell when the panel showed up. Even the virusguard din’t find it.
The script somehow blocked my Internet-access, used all the CPU-capacity and didn’t allow me to open for example Opera-browser (it opened, but shut down and kept using the RAM).
But my Win2000 jammed for a few minutes when the script launched, so maybe it just wasn’t smooth enough to make the changes without kicking windows. Hope it’ll fix itself when I restart the windows…
but thanks!
If you look in your task manager, winamp is still active, I killed Winamp and the little window dissapeared.
What a relief!
It’s not just on Winamp 5 :S Ive got a Computer game called Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, If any of you have heard of it. I can’t access my game because of ths Guru Meditation thing. ANy suggestions?
i’ve seen the same thing, righty after age of empires2 crashed…if any1 could give me a clue as to why that’s happening,i’d be eternlly grateful to them…..
specs: 2.4intel p4, 512 ram ddr, msi “pt880neo” mobo,directx 9.0c, sblive value “audigy”,
i’ve tried running dddiag and turning off agp texture filters and disabling sound acceleration too, but without any solutions.
I’ve a feeling this is cause of my new mobo(via chipset)(the earlier one was an intel 850) that used to also crash but was rectified by running command line parameters on the game (msync, mfill)
THANK YOU! Thank you so much for informing about this weird error. I was just listening to some music with my computer, reading the newspaper besides, and when I looked back at the screen, there suddenly was this error message. I got worried to the extreme if it would be some kind of malicious software (although I have fully updated AV/Firewall, but I’m still paranoid). I did a quick websearch, voilĂ , this page turned up, and I suddenly felt relieved as never before…
Thank you!
You’re very welcome… for more Warm Fuzzy feelings please visit regularly
Thanks from me, too!
I also saw that Guru Mediation a few minutes ago and started wondering why such an error that I only knew from Amiga would occur on a PC. I thought it could be a virus or something like that.
Thanks for enlightening me!
Flashback to my Amiga days! Mine said:
script failure - press left mouse button to continue
Guru meditation #0000.0000092C.21
scripts/pltime.maki
Same here… Just got it….. Was on my Laptop (IBM Thinkpad A20M 500Mhz 256Mem) and I just had changed out my Processor so I got pretty frightend that something bad had happened…. ugh… Hopefully thats the last I will see of that…
Just got it today, after some 3 years of running Winamp. Now using v5.094. Also, listening to Winamp radio, Shoutcast, *a* *lot*, like 24/7 for weeks sometimes without shutting down. Ran scans: all clean. Ran Google search: here; and thank goodness! (o: Have a snapshot of the dialog. No intrusions showing up on router logger. And Winamp plays on…
Thanks for the infos. I’m going to do some research on this “scripts/pltime.maki” - looks like a sig line. If someone is hacking in via Wimamp’s Shoutcast server’s adaptive relationship with client machines out here… Well, I think that’s probably a Federal crime nowadays, whether they think it’s funny or not, ehh? LOL! It is sort of funny — but IMHO “Weirdness” about sums it up! Later, if I find out anything else useful. Thanks again.
Hey,
I’ve been having the Guru Meditation Error for a couple of days now, first it came through winamp, changed my 5.04 skin to the basic one. Didn’t care much, restarted winamp and it was fine, but now my computer crashes all the time and restarts. And it happens since the guru meditation error, and i’m quite lost here. Can anyone help solve this?
Kai,
The Amiga’s “guru meditation” error wasn’t a virus. It was an error message built into the Amiga ROM. It’s the equivilent of a Windows blue screen of death.
Been using Winamp 2.x for seven years.
Tried out the lovely WInamp 5.11 last night.
The Guru Meditation #0021 script fatal error convinced me to uninstall WInamp 5.11.
Winamp 2 rules!
Guys,
I’m really glad I found this site, I was afraid the matrix was closing in on me.
About 3 months ago, I was shutting down my computer, I turned away to leave the room, and something compelled me to look back - when I did, I noticed that there was a small black box with red text on the monitor. I desprately ran back to my computer, to try and read what the text said, but my computer shut down right when I got within reading distance. The whole thing left me… quite frankly, scared shitless. I rebooted my system straight away, ran virus checks, etc… and could find nothing wrong. I have been using computers long enough to know that windows doesn’t use red messages like I saw, so presumed I had some sort of malacious software infecting my precious baby, but I resigned myself to defeat thinking it was perhaps a “one off” phenomenon when the scans were clear.
Just this morning, I had booted up my computer, and left it running while I fixed breakfast. I came back and to my horror the red message box was waiting for me again. My heart sank, I read the text this time, and didn’t understand a damn thing. I’ve been using computers since windows 3.1, and had never seen anythign like this before. It sent chills down my back.
Frantically I scanned for viruses again, and checked that my firewall was up. Again, everything was in order… so I googled guru.meditation and found this site.
I’m still not content though, although I can accept winamp causes this, my query is that, although I do have winamp installed, it was not running at the time, nor had I used it in 24 hours, and hadn’t used it since I’d booted up for the day. Therefore, why in the hell is winamp doing this too me? I checked the offical winamp forums, and found nothing on guru.meditation, although I’m now clued up on where it comes from (amiga, etc…).
Has anyone else found anything more about this error? Any evidence of exactly what it is, and why it occurs would be really really really appreciated.
Thanks…
*phew. winamp had me worried there for a sec before i did a quick google and came across this page.
i did a double take when i saw the error, and thought “that looks just like the amiga error message”
much thanks for the info and reassurance!
I had it today, I used Winamp and I got this
OSX Tiger skin. No virus found, I ended the proces “winamp.exe” and it was gone. I rebooted and everything looks normal. I hope I won’t see it again.
WHEW.. I don’t know if this info will come in handy.. Hopefully someone knows WHY it does this??
Just the other day I downloaded a program called “True Sword” and it is kind of a virus finder/snuffer. It found something that it claimed was NOT the popular “WinAmp” program and had nothing to do with it, but was a malicious program and should be deleted. SO I deleted it.
I used WinAmp earlier this evening and it worked just fine.. but as my computer is a dinosaur, it was slowing me down once I was done with it and trying to browse a little. SO I shut it down. I didn’t see this popup until I was ready to go to bed for the night and then googled and came across this.
Could it be the “whatever” I deleted is causing it? Or is this just a “thing”?
I got it today:
Guru Mediation #0021.ooooo4FB0.5
script/playertools.maki
It happened (probably) after trying to open corrupted wmv file (Windows Media Player didn’t open it either)
Hi all.
Search Google: Script Maki. and look.
I think that the skin of winamp, or script of skin, is the problem.
Why? I do not know it.
Thank for all.
After reading all your comments I simply went to http://www.winamp.com went to their support page and found this –> Try deleting studio.xnf first (main Winamp dir, make sure Winamp is closed first).
If the problem persists, try just reinstalling before doing anything as drastic as a clean install. It’s possible that the some of the contents of Skins\Modern folder have become corrupted…?
If it’s not that, then maybe you’ve installed some dodgy/incompatible 3rd-party plugin? You failed to mention whether you’ve installed any extra plugins, but never count those out as the cause…
I recently upgraded Winamp to version 5.2 due to a vulnerability problem detected in this software.
Shortly after I noticed this black and red message about a script error distinguished as “Guru Meditation 21″ script error. At the same time my computer is acting strangely; the CPU performance goes abruptly upward to 100% and immediately descends to zero percent. I have to reboot the computer to stop this strange behavior. This has happened to me twice.
I’m going to go ahead and delete file “studio.xnf” and see what happens. I don’t like what is going on; furthermore, I don’t like Winamp that much to risk my computer with a deficient software.
Regards,
Omar.-
I’ve gotten the same error (it’s why I came here) and mine says the error is with “scripts/beatsvisualization.maki” when I installed Winamp I didn’t install visualizations, so this may come from not doing a complete install.
Here’s mine:
Script Failure. Press left mouse button to continue.
Guru Meditation #0021 00004FBC 5 Script Fatal Error
Scripts/playertools.maki
Let’s see how that studio.xnf idea will solve things…
It`s not funny if it is a joke.
i been having that soddin error for than a month, ‘m really annoyed about it.
it really does slow down the whole system- but- i think is related to a problem with the windows media player.
theres this codec (codec X8-or amel 8), that its for reading several forms of image or alikes, commonly needed for some Clips, commonly on Porn, or execution of pages and program skins.
i cant reinstall WMP due to a defective Mainboard Error, though i tried-
seems to me like a derivated error.
R2-
that Amel or X8 codec, is related to active X8, if not the same- both as leapin forms of codec that evolve from reactivation and upgradin.
i had a problem with a prgrm nmd PCDJ FX silver, due to that active X or active amel.
probably related, as well,to old Mainmuther Boards.
Why the hell did WinAmp think it would be funny to put in a misleading error popup that looks like a virus? I’ve never used an Amiga, so if it’s supposed to be a joke, I’m not in on it. Idiots.
I got: Script Failure Guru Meditation #0021 000015CF 4 Script Fatal Error scripts/system.maki
hey all……..i deleted this file:
studio.xnf
and STILL, the message comes up……it’s annoying me alot now, as no one seems to have a cure for it. The guys making winamp have let me down if it’s a joke because i thought winamp was really professional until this happened.
If anyone can help further, please do. Cheers.
yeh me too bla bla but has anyone else had the win32.boxed.bs at the same time as this appears to be the bitch slowing my pc down to 386 speeds
I got the same thing this morning, I failed to jot down the whole string.
I use Firefox exclusively, and Winamp as default for all media. This machine has a fresh image on it, and the only thing I have done different was open IE6 (Never used on this previously). Firefox will not open videos from sites that run DirectShow Player or something. So I tried IE6. It did not open the vid either ( but no error message).
Hi
I get this error message on the top of the screen for some months now. It says: “Script failure. Press left mouse button to continue. Guru Meditation ..(bla) scripts/beatvisualisation.maki.” I have installed winamp 5.24 with all the default settings. It appears when I close winamp. I think the buggy think is the beat visualisation which appears when you enlarge the main pannel. However, I don’t really care if it makes an error, unless it formats C: :). It would be great if this message just didn’t appear.
It seems this is the only website that contains info on this error we are having. I wonder if any of you downloaded plugins or maybe have an illigal windows version.
Im curious cause I downloaded some plugin for httpq
Wow, glad i found this website. just seen the same error message on my PC. Glad its nothing serious. I rmemeber that message from the old Amiga days too.
did they fix this damn problem yet? i been using that ‘enqueing in winamp’ for couple years. same problem. errrr.
TADAA XD same error here__
it happens usually when i play knightonline i have winamp latest version but i guess its about kinda flash player problem knightonline is a flash game too and it rocks :d
lvl64 warrior (x)
1st time it’s happened to me, Thought I done too many drugs in the 80’s and was having flashbacks.
Brought back fond memories of the good old Amiga and hitting that Zipstick button.
I had this black screen flash up wid red text on it sayin bout guru meditation crap so i thought hold up, what have i downloaded recently which might have caused it. And guess wat it was only some silly skin vor winamp - the vista one. Everytime i went to change radiostation it used to crash.Bullsh*t skin. Sorted it now. Just changed it back to normal - modern - skin. Even better, switch back to older winamp versions. They are more reliable. Amiga….lol.Some memories i got with that ancient equipment.
This error happened when I was playing WoW and had WinAmp 5.3 playing music in the background.
I noticed that when it did come up, it was when a song was switching. I may have been ALT-TABing at the time as well.
I do not use any plugins or extra skins for WinAmp so I don’t think it had anything to do with that…
The most simpliar solution, uninstall WINAMP, use iTUNES
“WINAMP…really sucks the lama’s ass!!”

In case someone doesn’t know by the time they see this, the site http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/g/guru_meditation.html (that probably had the details) is no longer up (or I can’t get to it for some reason). It keeps insisting that I have to connect to the internet every single time I try to visit it, even if my internet is working perfectly anywhere else.
Does anyone know if the site is still up, or remembers what the info was on there and can post it, or a working link?
There’s one thing I’ve noticed. Winamp kept spiking to 50MB memory usage before it’d crash. I’d guess that it’s been trying to load all the media on my computer. I disabled the options to let it run through folders to find and categorize media.
Btw, if anyone else receives this message please list more software information.

ok, i had the exact same guru meditation crap. I was using an mpc file converter for winamp, and a few days later, that script error appeared. i dled the new 5.52, and it works fine. i think that means problem solved: get winamp 5.52.
I just installed Winamp 5.54 on my Dell XPS running XP SP2. I created a shortcut to run a radio station stream and changed the file association for ASX files to use Winamp. Everytime I use the shortcut to start the stream I get the message which is the subject of this site. Another identical shortcut but to a different station has no problem. The station with the problem works fine if I go to its site to start the stream or if I use Windows Media Player instead of Winamp. I am not expecting much from this site since the entries cover several years and the last one was in january, but thought I’d leave this anyway for what it’s worth. Oh - I don’t see any memory or CPU spikes when the message appears. Nor do I see any other anomolies. Winamp starts normally with the correct third-party skin.
I just got the Guru script error and came across this site, tried the link but the website looks like its still down. Anyone know where i can find out how to stop the error appearing? It only comes up when i try to open Winamp…nothings changed since last night when i left my computer, I shut winamp down, left the comp, went to work, just got back and tried to open some tunage, only to get the error.
Think i’m going to try a re-install…
The guru_meditation script error window appeared to me when I installed a new plug-in to winamp under the modern skin. When the troubling plug-in was removed from the plug-in folder winamp started up again fine. The solution was to install the plug-in under classic skin. I.e. start the winamp (without the trouble-maker), change to classic skin, close winamp, and then install the plug-in again. Now winamp will start normally with the classic skin. Now one can again use wanted skins etc.
