Opentracker: web counter, web tracking, web statistics & web analysis
NOTICE: This review was based on the first older version of OpenTracker.net. Since opentracker.net was overhauled I’ve had the chance to play with the greatly improved version. I’ll be writing up a review of the new version and will link to it here. Until then, get a free trial account and evaluate it yourself.
This is one example of where commercial “services” are far worse to open source solutions.
A quick signup and browse through the demo features shows me far less than a default awstats installation would give me, not to mention the power that is available for programmers through phpOpenTracker.
I guess there are a lot of people who just don’t know any better. This would be a good way to support one of the above mentioned OSS tracker programs.

Thanks for your kind words! One distinction we’d like to draw your attention to is that Opentracker is an application service provider, with an emphasis on ’service’. Also, Awstats and phpOpenTracker are essentially counters, which is a different type of technology. We’re quite familiar with opensource tracking solutions ourselves, which is where we first learned about & participated in opensource development.
Given our emphasis on service, the main difference between us and the products that you mention is that we store, host, maintain & etc, both the data & servers.
All that said, you are correct; that our application can be more powerful. In fact, with the help of feedback from over 100 webmasters, we’ve spent the past 6 months rebuilding our database. Our new database has a tremendous capacity compared to the older version. We’re looking at the ability to track sites with over a million pageviews per day, far above the capacity of phpOpenTracker. We’ve also engineered report generation times of fractions of seconds, as opposed to seconds.
We’re planning to go online with the new database as soon as we have finished the interface. As you may know yourself, development can be tricky to schedule.

We’re sorry that you are disappointed, although a strength is to be able to take criticism, especially when its hard-hitting. In this case, you are correct that there is always room for improvement & development.
