Friends arrested for stealing old money and burying it in the back yard

CNN.com - Men who claimed to find buried treasure arrested - Apr 29, 2005

This is too funny… rule number one! When telling a lie that involves more than one person GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHT!!!

The men’s stories, though, prompted some suspicions because of discrepancies. The depth of the buried crate, for example, ranged from 9 inches to 2 feet.

The men also gave conflicting reasons for digging in the yard of the house Crebase rents.

They told one reporter they were digging a hole to plant a tree.

In other reports, they said they were trying to remove a small tree or dig up the roots of a shrub that was damaging the home’s foundation.

Happy Passover

Just discovered the Shabot comic strip. Some very good stuff, with interesting explanations of the jewish terminology used. Some particularly funny ones.

My question is why can’t Christians have such a good sense of humor about our faith?

Life Update

A couple things really… you may have noticed my new poll box, please take the time to click whenever you see it change.

The most recent and long awaited PR update came, and I am now again the proud owner of a 6/10 site.

You may notice the new ads down at the bottom, that’s part of the digitalpoint ad network it’s free and as far as I can see fairly “non-evil”, I’ll be hacking the ads a bit to get them into a more palatable format. The idea is that you distribute the ads over all your pages (I have over 700 here) and then you are assigned “weight” which you can use to run ads. So I have links pointing out from all my pages, and am then focusing all my weight on one page. Because the ads are being served on the server side, and are not javascipts google will notice them and credit you with PR. At least that’s the idea. We’ll see how it turns out.

I just got a new camcorder, it’s a Canon MVX 200 pretty nice little thing, now I just need to get a card that will suck in the AV stream.

‘Titanic’ theme played while storm hit ship

‘Titanic’ theme played while storm hit ship

Clark wasn’t the only one who had thoughts of disaster: Other passengers whose rooms were slammed by walls of water huddled under blankets in the atrium where they stared at the ship’s piano player repeatedly performing the theme from Titanic.

At least someone had a sense of humor :)

iGrep and the duplication of Internet Content

Note: Since the time this blog entry was written many great changes have been made to the iGrep search engine. The amount of ads have been greatly reduced, the archives are no longer searching and I believe iGrep is a useful too for searching the content on the devshed network. Read the following comment and the discussion that follows with that in mind.

Devshed is reproducing hundreds of thousands of mailing list and usenet posts which are marked as their “archives” but exist for the sole purpose of generating ad revenue when people stumble onto them. This is their business plan, and the purpose of iGrep. This is internet and search engine spam, and I pity anyone who lands on their pages or thinks that using their search will help answer any questions that they have. iGrep offers NOTHING that is not already in google but by duplicating content (violating googles guidlines) they are making content even more difficult to find. I can’t even open one of their archived pages without my browser grinding to a halt while trying to display all of their silly flash ads.

Google adsense policies clearly states that:

No Google ad may be placed on pages published specifically for the purpose of showing ads, whether or not the page content is relevant.

Please convince me that this page has another purpose.

Nobody wins with this type of spam, the advertisers don’t win, Internet users don’t win, and unless the promoters get hard cold cash they don’t gain anything either. The only people hoping to gain anything are the spammers themselves.

Why respectable companies, and decent people associate and represent a company that does this, I don’t know.

Blog Aggregation and Spam

I’m getting really tired of sites which are aggregating aggregators, just to generate content for their own site and spamming the internet with copyrighted content.

Artima is borderline, they grab the content of your feed and put it in their “forums”, put google ads on your content, without even the decency to host images themselves. At least you sign up and allow them to do it.

I just bumped into this post on Livejournal and it prompted this complaint.

My (non-lj) blog entries are being hosted on LJ via the syndicated planet_php Feed.

I allow planet-php.net to syndicate my content, as part of their front page news, but cannot allow a third party site to create individual pages which contain nothing other than the content from my blog.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/planet_php/23541.html

I understand that you may be syndicating the content for your users ease-of-use and if this is the case then add appropriate meta tags to prevent my content being listed on google and other search engines.

My favorite Urinal

Browsing UB this morning reminded me of my favorite urinal story.

It was (really) late one night during the summer of 1997 when in Odessa, Ukraine. I was returning from a party and I was dying to take a whiz.

I had made it as far as the last tram connection which would bring me down the “fantana” line to our place. The transport system was such, that as a rule, you usually waited for 45 minutes only to have 3 trams come together.

There was a public bathroom underneath the tram stop, but I had never ventured down there… this was an emergency so I decended the dark stairs. When my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I could see another guy (who was obviously in my situation) standing by the door urinating in the general direction of the mens room.

Thankful that I didn’t have to venture any further, I took my place next to him and took a very relieving whiz.

Now isn’t that just the most georgous Drupal site you’ve ever seen? I’m very impressed with the colors as well.

The logo is just a little too Skype-like, but other than that it is a feast for the eyes!

No More Free BitKeeper

Feature: No More Free BitKeeper

I hate commenting on stories that have already hit slashdot, but this one is too good to pass up.

I’ve never been that much of a Free Software zealot (there are some who would argue otherwise), but Linus’ move to BK did surprise me way back in 02. Linus has never been a Free Software zealot, so I understood that he chose the tool for practical reasons rather than ethical reasons.

I was tracking the progress of Xaraya around that time and when they moved to BK I didn’t bother anymore.

Anyway the excuse by bitmover is a joke, the 16bit limit that is quickly approaching is too good an opportunity to let pass, I am sure they have been planning this for a while. So now that Linux is coming up to the 64k changeset mark, they can’t even simply use the versions they have.

And if I were Linus, I would insist that NO linux code be stored in Bitkeeper. It’s crazy that Bitmover still uses Linux as a PR point, while they won’t even give Linus a license simply because he works for OSDL.
