No More Free BitKeeper

Feature: No More Free BitKeeper

I hate commenting on stories that have already hit slashdot, but this one is too good to pass up.

I’ve never been that much of a Free Software zealot (there are some who would argue otherwise), but Linus’ move to BK did surprise me way back in 02. Linus has never been a Free Software zealot, so I understood that he chose the tool for practical reasons rather than ethical reasons.

I was tracking the progress of Xaraya around that time and when they moved to BK I didn’t bother anymore.

Anyway the excuse by bitmover is a joke, the 16bit limit that is quickly approaching is too good an opportunity to let pass, I am sure they have been planning this for a while. So now that Linux is coming up to the 64k changeset mark, they can’t even simply use the versions they have.

And if I were Linus, I would insist that NO linux code be stored in Bitkeeper. It’s crazy that Bitmover still uses Linux as a PR point, while they won’t even give Linus a license simply because he works for OSDL.
