Just Monkeying Around

Monkey Maddness – Just Monkeying Around

A rope over the top of a fence has the same length on each side and weighs one-third of a pound per foot. On one end of the rope hangs a monkey holding a banana, and on the other end a weight equal to the weight of the monkey. The banana weighs 2 ounces per inch. The length of the rope in feet is the same as the age of the monkey, and the weight of the monkey in ounces is as much as the age of the monkey’s mother. The combined ages of the monkey and its mother is 30 years. One-half the weight of the monkey plus the weight of the banana is one-fourth the sum of the weights of the rope and the weight. The monkey’s mother is one-half as old as the monkey will be when it is three times as old as its mother was when she was one-half as old as the monkey will be when it is as old as its mother will be when she is four times as old as the monkey was when it was twice as old as its mother was when she was one-third as old as the monkey was when it was as old as its mother was when she was three times as old as the monkey was when it was one-fourth as old as its is now. How long is the banana?

Where have I heard this before?

Wired News: Some Sex With Your Clone Perhaps?

Some great Investigatory journalism here… Two “amateur documentary makers” (aka, kids with camcorders) “infiltrate” (walk into) the Raelians and take yet unreleased “rare video footage” of a Las Vegas seminar.

This “documentary” (which nobody has seen) was made with the intent to “further tarnish the group’s reputation and even help shut it down“. So it’s bound to be good investigatory reporting, right?

Oh wait… here’s the clincher “One ‘gotcha’ moment shows the Raelian leader riveted by the erotic gyrations of Raelian dancers.” Riiiiiight!

I’m always amused when I see these cookie-cutter cult articles, they must have a template somewhere which they pass around.

  • Expose Evil Leader (especially evil because they continue to illude prosecution for thier crimes)
  • Sex
  • Control (either through sex or evil leader, or aliens in this case)
  • Obligatory Rick Ross quote
  • SEX
  • Catchy title (including Sex, Aliens, Clones, or all of the above)
  • PROFIT!!!

Wired News: Flickr Fans to Yahoo: Flick Off!

Wired News: Flickr Fans to Yahoo: Flick Off!

Yay, rant time… I really should calculate how long it takes me to write this and then compare it to how long it would take me to “produce” it on my “show”. This whole podcast thing is too crazy… but fun and I’m glad that people can make a living doing what they enjoy.

Since I have a couple mintues (it’s 22:49 so I’m just about to crash), I’ll go through the pros and cons of a podcast.

Bad Things

  • Takes longer to produce
  • Bandwidth
  • No written record of what I’ve said
  • Ignored by google
  • bandwidth
  • Can’t listen to “Democracy Now!” when creating it
  • I rant too much
  • Readers can’t skim through it.
  • BANDWIDTH

Good things

  • Can listen away from the computer
  • Can include music
  • Can pretend I’m a DJ
  • Can Pick my toes while “producing” my “show”

Well, that’s all I have to say that.

Back to the flickr fans… very foolish. I don’t see why they can’t just create a Y! account and move on with thier lives (or lack thereof).

Speaking of Yahoo! I just installed the new google search, and the sidebar is TOTALLY AWESOME! Just when I was starting to like Yahoo. Google now just needs an MyWeb type thing and domination will be complete.

Zoo, Monkey Farts, Windows, Google, Traveling in Russia

This one is about as random as it gets… I need to make notes before I start so that I don’t rant and hit all the topics. Maybe I’d do that if I was serious about it.

No music this time, I’m in the process of moving servers, and when I do I’ll get all this in gear. Also am working on a new look for the blog… don’t know when that is going to happen :)

I encoded this at 64 kbps, it’s just talking so there is no reason why it should be any higher. It’s totally understandable, but 15 minutes is only 8mb.

/me pokes the good people at pro-php podcast!

“Show” here!

Did Pat Robertson Profit From His Assasination Comment?

Stock News Direct: Did Pat Robertson Profit From His Assasination Comment?

Did Pat Robertson make money by publicly calling for the murder of Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela?

Political-economic analyst Al Martin says, “Pat’s comments created a so-called ‘flight to quality’ bid in both the September long bonds and the Sep. dollar cntracts…What’s interesting to note,” Martin continues, “is that a fund that Robertson is a large investor in, one of the deep offshore Smart Republicn Money trading pools, was a substantial purchaser of the Sep long bond and dollar contract indexes last night (Aug 22) just before he made those remarks.

Google Talk – First impressions

Google Talk

They say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free anytime, anywhere in the world.

Sounds like they really think they are doing something different, when in reality there is not much which is very special about google talk.

I tried out the official client, and the first thing that hit me was the sparse interface. What google has done is made the chat client as web-like as possible. In fact, you could probably whip up an AJAX client which is exactly identical in functionality. All links are underlined, and mcuh like web pages, there is nothing you will need to doubleclick on anything.

This works nicely with my theory that one morning we will wake up and find out that we won’t need anything more than firefox and google to be fully functional in our work and play.

A couple annoying things: No timestamps in the chat, no pasting of html… although links are made clickable. You can do some simple formatting using a *bold* and _italic_. Maybe there is a manual out there.

I tried the voice chat, it worked nicely. I only chatted with one person, so can’t say that it’s better than skype at this point, my one call was certainly no better than some chats I have had on skype which seemed to be totally flawless.

Google Talk is also tied into gmail so when you get a new email you’ll see a nice little message in the corner of your screen. Maybe I should start using my gmail some more.

Oh, well… I’m awormus@gmail.com add me :)
