MSN Block-Checker Removal (and yes they are f*cking spammers)

MSN Block Checker works on AOL & Yahoo also

NOTE: there are instructions for removing this below. If after using the tool it still exists them comment with information about what is happening and I will try to help.

Here is a tool which may help with the removal. Use at your own risk!

This peice of software is a real class act by yet another f*cking spammers. You install it thinking that you will be able to see who is blocking you in MSN, and I guess you have to give it your MSN username and password, and it hooks itself into your MSN so that it sends a message to everyone you chat with advertising itself.

Very sneaky! The “feature” is explained in the help page “Block Checker has a powerful fun feature to tell your friends about Block Checker without the headache of telling EACH friend about it. This is how we let other people know about our application. If you wish to remove this function from our software you can do so by downloading this tool (if in the event our uninstaller doesn’t work use this to remove it) .

Update by: LifeDrain

LifeDrain gave the following input in a comment, I’m posting it here for anyone else who might find this page. Thanks LifeDrain!

You don’t need to download anything to get rid of it. First, log off MSN and go to Start > Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs and look to see if there are any BlockChecker progs to be removed. If so, Remove those and proceed to the next step. If not, just move on. Next, go to whatever drive ur program files folder is located on (most ppl use C: drive) so C: > Program Files >Block Checker and manually delete all of the files inside that folder except the one with the little MSN person icon because that one will give you access denied. After doing this, go to your Start button, click RUN and type in regedt32 then hit OK. When the box pops up, BE VERY CAREFUL HERE cuz screwing with ur registry can bork ur whole machine if you don’t know what ur doing. Navigate your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SOFTWARE >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion >Run and delete the Block-Checker reg key there (and anything else that says Block Checker ONLY on it). Close out of that and reboot your machine. Now, make your way back to C: > Program Files and delete the Block-Checker Folder still listed there. Empty your Recycling Bin and reboot one final time and that nasty Block-Checker should be gone.

If you successfully removed it, you should now consider going to http://www.grisoft.com and downloading AVG Anti-Virus FREE version by clicking on their site-map and clicking AVG Free and to http://www.lavasoftuse.com and downloading Ad-Aware SE. Run both of these regularly to keep spyware and viruses to a minimum. Another tip, don’t be such a cybernoob and stop downloading shit for MSN Messenger becuz it’s all ad infested crap that doesn’t do anything but infect your PC and the PCs of your idiot friends who read ur spam and DL it too… if you can’t keep your PC free from this crap you shouldn’t own a computer.Good Luck and Have a nice day! :)

Update:

As far as I can see the file crss.exe does not have anything to do with this problem. the CRSS.exe file is part of a virus called “W32.AGOBOT.GH“. Get a decent virus scanner to protect yourself.

do you click on the tool, in the sentence “If you wish to remove this function from our software you can do so by downloading this tool (if in the event our uninstaller doesn’t work use this to remove it) .“ ???

    Comment | 21/8/2005
  • Daniel

FOR ALL THOSE WHO CANT WORK OUT WHAT TO DO, YES YOU DO CLICK ON THAT ‘TOOL’ LINK AND THEN RUN THE PROCESSKILL AND TERMINATE THE ONES WITH BLOCK-CHECKER IN THEIR NAME…

    Comment | 21/8/2005
  • Emma

Instal that program, terminate the processes it tells you to, go to ‘run’ on the start menu enter “REGEDIT.EXE”, find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and then delete anything to do with blockchecker. Then you can go to Program Files and delete the blockchecker folder. I did all this but uninstalled the blockchecker first, whch did not work properly. There’s also some things which come with it that need uninstalling (a search bar and something else) these are quite easy to get rid of tho.

  • Psychomama

Bah. Second bloody time I’ve had to do this and I didnt even click on the install button. Grrrrrr. Thanks for the tip though

    Comment | 21/8/2005
  • No offence guys, but some of you are dumb. Don’t go on to a page with a removal tool (nicely done by the way Wormus), and ask how to remove it. And admit it, most of you downloaded this block-checker yourself, not your sister or someone else. As for “Dont Let Women Near Your Computer”.. read Emma’s reply above :).

  • I clicked this link when chatting with someone.. ended up that I thought I had a virus (well, the computer) .. tried uninstalling .. it removed it from the add/remove list but not from my computer obviously! Then tried deleting the file in program files, .. reads access denied, as most of you haev stated. I did a google search, ended up here, and saw that some were actually able to remove it. I did download the “tool” but states to put in this processkill.exe and i did…. but then it says cant find “processkill” … so read thru this and found “regedit” .. tried that.. was able to delete it fromt here.. then go to program files.. but then it still reads access denied.. any other ideas .. or can you tell me somthing I mayhave done wrong… this is really p*ssing me off!!!!!!!!
    Thanx, Mystee

THANX SO MUCH! that virus was gettin on my nerves!
    ^^^^^
when i did the those steps it still said error but i went to the bottom bar by start clicked on task manager and deleted all the block checkers and then it let me delete the folder! thanx so much!! im never clickin on another thing like that again

Ended the process by doing CTRL + ALT + DELETE, and then used your registry key to remove it from the registry. I then exited MSN messenger, went in Program Files, and successfully deleted the whole folder.

I’m block checker free, and its all thanks to you!!

andrea follow the ctrl alt and delete process i posted before you. post 84. its quicker and if i read correctly everyone is doing that.

  • Eventually there should be a specific removal tool for this problem, if it continues to grow on the Web. I’m sure most of you here remember the CWS fiasco. :P

Removing the block-checker program from your PC does not guarantee protection next time. I don’t know if Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy are able to remove it though, as it is considered more of a pest. Thanks for that comment LifeDrain, you saved me from posting it. :)

Hi, i have found at a simple and easy to understand way to get rid of Block Checker.
I didnt want to delte and use all those download this and it will fix this problem. the problem we are all having is that once we have unistalled block checker it still comes up on our msn saying hi go to block checker/ something like that then a link.

when you search your problem uccurs becuase there are still files there.

here is how to get rid of these files simply and easily without downloading anything and it will take you all of 1 minute.

    * Go to Ctrl,Alt Delete. Go to process and there on the list you will find Block Checker.exe.
    * Click once on it then go down to the right hand corner (bottom) and click that button. I think it says end task/program.
    * A little box will come up saying if you end this task it may cause problems or loss of data. that means like if you are exceting word without saving. or like exceting a game without saving. Just like ok.
    The program will be gone.
    * Do another search for blockchecker. Delete all files in the search (related to block checker) you should be able to delete the files now. Make sure you delete the files from you recyle bin as well. now you wont hav any probs, and you wont hav an annyoing message come up.
p.s- block checker isnt a virus its just an annyoing program! dont be worried like i was!! also my friend was able to delte this program the way i told her to.

i am also having 1 prob, i cant find the program paint any more. so if you can help me plez do!!

Hey I noticed a lot of people complaining that what they did didn’t work despite it being the step by step isntructions given above. I had the same problem. The reason it STILL has access denied even after deleting it from registry is because in order to remove it completely, it works to go into safe mode first. Once I’d done this it worked :)

    Hi..

I used the above trick (HKEY LOCAL MACHINE> SOFTWARE etc etc..) and it didn’t work- it kept coming back.. !

However, i have managed to remove it by:

    1. Rebooting my computer in safe mode, (u can do this by pressing F8 when its booting up sometimes OR… going to ‘RUN’ then typing in MSCONFIG, then on the system configeration menu seleting BOOT.INI tab then selecting the /SAFEBOOT. option.)

    2. Once the computer is in safemode, deleting the actual programme (Going to ‘C:’ drive *or whichever drive you use*), then programme files then deleting the entire MSN block checker folder containing that icon of msn man wearing a hat. - if ur in safe mode it won;t be access is denied) You can then do the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/ regedt32 Trick tool thingy to check its been removed.

    3. Empty recycle bin

    4. Go back to ‘RUN’ then type in MSCONFIG, then basically undo the SAFEBOOT option, so that when you reboot it won’t boot back in safemode.

    5. Reboot machine

    6. Celebrate.. because block checker will no longer be there!!

REMEMBER; THE trick here is to do the thing in SAFEMODE. Otherwise, it might not delete everything because BLOCKCHECKER has embedded itself into ur computer files which are used when the computer is running in normal mode.

This sorted it for me…. best of luck
