Global Nomad’s and TCK - Get your GEAR!

Fun Stuff : Global Nomad & Third Culture Kids : CafePress.com

TCK : CafePress.com

Thanks to the comment on my last post from Shoshauna, I was informed of a new shop for TCK gear. Thanks for the post and best of luck with the endeavour.

One interesting thing about TCK’s (that’s Third Culture Kids, for the uninitiated) is that I am not aware of any good internet based forum, if anyone comes to this post while looking for one, email me at (firstname@lastname.com) and let me know if you found something interesting.

I found the below site a while back. It goes through lulls. Sometimes active, sometimes not. However, I have not really found a good forum for TCKs. It would be great if someobody was willing to start one.

And for people, like me, who still did not get what TCK is, here is what wikipedia says
“Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is a term for children who have lived a significant portion of their lives in a country that is not their passport country, usually because of parents’ work obligations.

TCK’s share some common characteristics amongst the sub categories such as multilingualism, tolerance for other cultures, a never-ending feeling of homesickness for their adopted country and a desire to remain in close contact with friends from their adopted country as well as other TCK’s who they have grown up with.”

Hrm, that isn’t exactly accurate. One of the primary traits amongst TCKs is the lack of “belonging” anywhere. TCKs may “adopt” a country, but in general they feel out of place regardless of the country they are in.

In general TCKs feel most comfortable around other TCKs or foreigners in general.

Actually a TCK usually refers to a person who has grown up most of their life in one culture that is not their passport country because of a parents career choice… and thus has a special connection with that country. A global nomad is someone who has lived abroad (usually in multiple countries) because of parents job and more typically feel a more general/global sense of belonging. Ps. I think we can turn the GNVV into the forum that people are talking about.
