The GBP 333 cocktail

The GBP 333 cocktail | This is London
Two bankers out celebrating their City bonuses have helped create one of the world’s most expensive cocktails.

The Goldman Sachs employees had just received sevenfigure sums and were determined to celebrate in style, so they asked a barman at Umbaba in Soho to create the most opulent drink possible. The result was the Magie Noir - costing GBP 333 a glass.

The pair ordered two rounds of Magie Noir, a total of 20 drinks. Because they were buying in bulk they were charged GBP 300 per glass, adding GBP 6,000 to their final bill of about GBP 15,000.

Umbaba has added Magie Noir to its cocktail menu and will launch it at a party on Saturday when each glass will come with a cocktail pin made of 24-carat white gold.

Global Nomad’s and TCK - Get your GEAR!

Fun Stuff : Global Nomad & Third Culture Kids : CafePress.com

TCK : CafePress.com

Thanks to the comment on my last post from Shoshauna, I was informed of a new shop for TCK gear. Thanks for the post and best of luck with the endeavour.

One interesting thing about TCK’s (that’s Third Culture Kids, for the uninitiated) is that I am not aware of any good internet based forum, if anyone comes to this post while looking for one, email me at (firstname@lastname.com) and let me know if you found something interesting.

Interesting talk about “Java Superplatforms”. A quick mention to Zend/IBM is made when talking about Superplatform contenders.

What’ Happening at ADAP

Greetings, and happy Sunday :)

This is a catchup blog entry, to let you know about the fact that I just changed the “official” name of this blog from “Another Day in Paradise” to “A Day in Paradise”.

The main reason for the change is because because I’m doing a bit more work on my Podcast, and will probably be creating a couple promos, joining networks and being a bit more shameless in my self promotion. I’ll keep posting all my podcasts to this feed, so if you are subscribed to the main feed you’ll get them all. I’ll also create a Activism feed as well as a Programming feed, and will create a page for the podcasts so that people can only subscribe to what they are interested in. All that to say that while washing dishes, and drinking a beer it came to me that “Another Day In Paradise” was just too long to be “commercially viable”.

Anyway, you know where to come to get the details. I’m still planning that server move and once that is done I’ll step up the work on getting all this together, coming up with a new design and generally getting everything in gear. But like always don’t hold your breath.

If anyone knows of any cool “Podcast Networks” that my “show” would fit into, please let me know. Also take a second or two to vote for me at Podcast Alley, or Podcast Pickle. If you are a YME user, subscribe to my show here. And if you use iTunes, you can get my feed from feedburner.

Digimode.co.uk - Spamming != Increasing Customer Base

Now I’m not writing this because I’m bored, and I’m not writing this in anger because of the 2792 blog spams that accumulated over night, or the 197 blog spams which I have been hit with since I last hit the delete button (about an hour ago). I’m writing this because spammers are evil and deserve a slow and painful death, and the least I can do is steal the top spot on google.

So our winners for today’s spammer of the day award is is Digimode.co.uk.

From strategy to execution, we have the capabilities to provide our customers with seamless, one-stop solutions. Be it getting closer to your customers or getting products to market, we address the entire spectrum of technology needs.

No word in the email or their website about their spamming services… I guess you have to find that out yourselves. Maybe next time they’ll see that spamming (me at least) causes more trouble than it’s worth.

Stan “Tookie” Williams to be Executed

SaveTookie.org Home

The U.S. Supreme Court, on October 11, 2005, ruled against Tookie on his final appeal and set his execution date for December 13. Thus they disregarded 9 of the 24 Ninth Circuit Court judges’ assertion that the District Attorney at Tookie’s trial employed “reprehensible and unconstitutional” racist tactics, using animal-in-a-jungle metaphors to refer to Tookie and to the South Central environment in which he lived. This landmark ruling means that minorities can now legally be rejected from juries based on race. This is now the law of the land.

Very sad news! For anyone who hasn’t seen it already, watch Redemption NOW!

PHP Phrasebook — the 5 Minute Review

PHP Phrasebook“Look Mom, a PHP book without a chapter on design patterns”. Yup, you heard me right, the PHP Phrasebook goes back to the basics of PHP with a focus on functionality, simplicity and security, things which seem to unpresent in a lot of books these days.

The PHP Phrasebook is the first installment of a new series from Sams, which ca only be described as “a Cookbook in a Nutshell”. The book itself is small enough to fit in your back pocket and thick enough (278 pages) not to be totally ruined when you sit down. The book belongs to the Developer’s Library series, and has the same look and wonderful binding.

The Chapters are as follows:
1. Manipulating Strings
2. Working with Arrays
3. Date and Time (I’d never heard of date_sunrise() before)
4. Interacting with Web Forms (including good security tips and best practices)
5. Remembering Users (Sessions)
6. Using Files on the Server File System
7. Making Data Dynamic (Database access, including coverage of PDO)
8. Using XML (XML in both PHP4 and PHP5, SimpleXML and DOM)
9. Communicating with others (Sockets, SOAP and a rant on AJAX)

As expected, each chapter covers various common tasks (phrases) associated with the subject. Each chapter ends with a “What does PEAR Offer” text box which explores the possibilities using PEAR libraries. The content is very up-to-date, discussing the upcoming PHP5.1 release and functionality which will be available in it. There are also many “links” to external websites and pages which explain or are sources of additional information on the topic.

The lists of “phrases” within the chapters are not extensive, but a very systematic approach has been taken so that the code is as functional as possible. One example of this is the choice to instead of quoting a regular expression as a way to validate the syntax of an email address, a couple very simple checks are made to verify that the email address string contains the correct elements. This functional approach to problem solving is exactly what makes PHP a great language for people to pick up and learn.

Another focus is on security. In chapter 3 a routine for removing magic_quotes was developed, and then in each “phrase” where external data is being handled that routine is included and called. This may seem redundant, but there is no point including incomplete “phrases” when trying to learn a language, so while the extra space (just one include_once() call) is a bit annoying, I am very happy with the choice to include it. You will also notice that no data is displayed without being run through htmlentities() first.

The only problem I had is the fact that due to the size of the book, often the example code samples are awkward or break in difficult places. However, I am very pleased with this book in general and would recommend it to anyone who is coming to PHP from another Programming language or just starting with PHP as their first language.

I’m looking forward for the upcoming Apache and MySQL Phrasebook. What about a PHP SPL Phrasebook?
