Steve Eley coined a new phrase on his popular SciFi podcast magazine EscapePod.
“Webfungus” is a his term for Link Farms otherwise known as Search Engine Spam.
Now I have a question. If there were a magazine which sent people from shop to shop to gathered information, then they chose, based on the information they gathered, which shop they would feature for free in their advertising section, who would be resposible if “bad shops” got listed in the advertising section?
Your site is your castle. I have the right to make whatever kind of site I want. Just because you click on my site through a third party website, how am I to blame. That is Google’s fault.
Not only does Google offer free advertising through their search engine, but they also a simple way to monetize the system.
So not only do you have a magazine that will give free advertising to anyone, but also a complete business model through which you can make serious money through the system.
Google is entirely responsible for the problems with the system. If you don’t like the results that you get back from your searches, then choose another search engine. Google is certainly making money from the system, and the “webfungi” are probably making more money than we are.
The only people who are getting screwed are us and the advertisers.

In other news, the last episode of BSG was a bit slow… too touchy feely, not enough (any?) starbuck, Baltar continues to go downhill. An easily skipable episode!
