‘Brokeback’ Breaks No Ground
Hollywood has no major gay actors — none out of the closet, that is. “Brokeback” needed some star power, otherwise it would have been a minor gay art film. So the producers got two straights to impersonate gay men — and then reassured everyone in sight that they were not gay at all. Whatever this is — and it is worthy in its own terms — it is not a revolution but rather a statement of how little things have changed. In more ways than one, “Brokeback Mountain” is a tragedy.
In other news, in “The Passion” it was discovered that Jesus wasn’t really Jesus but a human “impersonating” him. HELLO!!! That’s what actors do, that’s why it’s called acting.

Hmm. I don’t know the context of the article, but…
I think their point wasn’t so much that a straight actor is playing someone who’s gay. Of course, that’s just being an actor.
I think their point was more, the people involved went to such great lengths to assure everyone that these actors were most certainly not gay, after having just played gay characters.
I think the tragic part they may be referring can be demonstrated by the absurdity of — when a gay actor plays a straight man, there is no big hullabaloo to assure everyone that this actor most certainly is not straight, but is, in fact, gay.
