Downloading FC5

Jon Bauer has done his good deed for the week and pursuaded me to download FC5 and give Linux a try… I agreed to the first part and am in the process of downloading the 3.2gig iso.

FC5 torrent

I’ve looked at Ubuntu, but the fact that they are so Gnome heavy sorta scares me. So since Jon has promised to give me support, and I do have a FC server, I’ll go with that.

And I’ll post if I do get around to installing and playing with this… You never know, I might become a linux geek after all ;)

The Infection Ends

Scott Sigler has brought his third Podcast novel “Infection” to a close. In the final episode of the podcast gorefest Scott announced his next Podcast novel ‘The Rookie’ which starts next October. He will also be working on “Nocturnal” which may follow.

In other news, Sirius satilite radio listeners will now be getting a fix of Scott’s podcast novels as part of the daily podshow lineup. Being the first of Scott Siglers novels, EarthCore is by far my favorite of Scott Siglers novels. So if you’re on Sirius make sure you get this in your ears! If not, you can subscribe to it at Podiobooks.com

Podcast Awards – Your Choices!

Ok, so it’s time for the podcast awards, and I’m here to tell you what you’re going to vote for :)

When I don’t actually listen to any shows in the category I won’t list anything, so you’re free to choose whatever you like in that category ;)

So browse over to PodcastAwards.com and get started!

[People's Coice]
No Choice

[Best Produced]

If Shadow Falls was there I would vote for it, even though they have only released 1 show it’s fantastic. Catholic Insider and Mad Money Machine would come a close second.

[Best Podcast Directory]
Totally Podcast Pickle! Not only do they have a GREAT directory but a fantastic community as well. Podcast Pickle Forever!

[Best Mobile Podcast]
I’m not sure what this is, but since Catholic Insider is the only show I listen to here, that’s the one to vote for.

[Business]

Of course Mad Money Machine. No discussion here. MMM totally rocks!

[Comedy]
Don’t listen to comedy shows

Skip over to

[Podsafe Music]

Accident Hash it the only option. I wish Best of the Worst Podcast made the list.

[Political]
Democracy Now gets my vote, although if Left Wing Nut Job was there I would have voted.

[Religion Inspiration]
Daily Breakfast – Father Roderick gets my vote on anything he does. He’s a true visionary in the field and has interesting shows with great production value.

[Sports]
Who listens to sports podcast? Although I did listen to an episode of the Phedippidations podcast and found that pretty good.

[Technology / Science]

Don’t listen to anything in this category… you would think that This Week in Tech would have made this category. That show is awesome!

[Travel]
Whatever you want :)

OK then fill in your details and hit submit! And we’re done :D

WOW Quick Siver demonstration – Macs rawk!!!

So I’ve always been a windows fanboy. But seeing this demonstration of Quicksilver for mac makes me rethink my previous statement of jumping onto the Vista bandwagon as soon as it’s released. Quicksilver is exactly the way I work in the command line, but so much more powerful.

Vista: probably around $400 for Pro version vs. Macbook Pro: $2300

Next year I’ll probably need a new notebook anyway since my 14-month-old toshiba is hitting the dust.

Consumer-grade laptop with vista: $1500
Vista for my desktop: $400

I need to upgrade my desktop… maybe this will be a good opportunity to switch to Linux. So…

Macbook Pro: $2300
Linux for Desktop: $0

I’ll still have my current Win2k installation which I could dual boot linux. I’ll think about it later… Time to start saving up :)

Milosevic-Lay Connection

(putting on his best Jack Bauer voice) I need you to cross check the records for these two men. Call devision and get the names of everyone they met in the weeks preceeding their deaths, cross check those results against our database and see if anything comes up. I also need to coroners reports, cross check any abnormalities in their blood and see if there is any link. Send that information to my workstation.

Bomb in Lebanon kills 4 UN observers

You know it’s bad when Kofi Annan suggests it was an intentional strike.

“This coordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long-established and clearly marked U.N. post at Khiyam occurred despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that U.N. positions would be spared Israeli fire,” he said in a statement.

“Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the U.N. force commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular U.N. position from attack.”

Sound like a “don’t even think about sending international observers” message to me. Anyway, I think international observers are useless… we all remember how much good they were in Srebrenica. Even if they have the best intentions, exactly what are they supposed to do?

Oh for the good old days when everyone just picked a side.

Frappr now with MySpace Features

What started out as a simple google maps hack has turned into a full featured social networking site with some really nice features.

Since the maps are the main reason why people are at frappr, they have used this in some cool ways, for example the chat applet is integrated with the maps, so the map will zoom over to the location of the person who last entered a message. There is also a nice “Cool people near you” feature, which pulls up people in your general area.

There is also the ability to customize your page, add pictures/music, blog, add images, and of course embed so much javascript and flash that your profile will crash all but the strongest of browsers.

More than just the nice features, it’s good to see this small application maturing to something that could at some point have a business built around it.

Packt OSS CMS Awards

Packt has $10,000 up for a “Best Open Source CMS” contest. The details are a bit vague on what the prizes will be awarded on, but I’m going to put my picks up here in no specific order.

eZpublish: Best Commercial/Enterprise support
Drupal: Best Community support, also best community CMS.
Joomla: Not one of my favorites but has a ton of modules, and good community developer support.

There are a ton of CMSs out there, but in the PHP world these three are the only ones that I’ve evaluated that stand up to my interpretation of a useful CMS. I’m also talking purely about “consumer” content management here, not development frameworks or other complex systems.

Note: I didn’t want to say this, but I think it’ll go to drupal. The CMS isn’t talked about a whole lot, but it is used by a Lot of great sites, such as the new twit.tv site. I’ve also talked to a couple big companies who are looking through PHP’s CMS offerings, and I’ve been surprised how many times drupal has come up. Good stuff there.

Google supports NOODP Meta Tag

Annoyed with google using your ODP description for your site? Matt Cutts annouced that google now supports the noodp meta tag, which will mean that by adding the following meta tag to your page google will not use the odp description but rather make something up based on the actual content of the page.

<meta name=”robots” content=”noodp”>

I am personally fairly happy with my description… what I’m mildly confused about is the fact that google gives weight to the title of your odp listing even if that is nowhere on your page, as demonstrated when searching for my old blog title. None of the text that is displayed is anywhere on the page.

Shadow Falls

There’s a new ultra-creepy serialized podcast drama from writer/podcaster Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff.

The first episode of Shadow Falls is out, fantastic production value, good premise and very, very creepy. The production style obviously borrows a lot from the 50’s style radio drama, a major difference being the quality of the effects, and the brilliant music by everyone’s favorite mad sumo.

This release is on the heels of the release of podshow plus, I’m not exactly sure how that whole thing works, I just subscribed to the show the old fashioned way using the rss feed and juice reciever. We’ll see where it goes.

Clicks of Separation

I wake up this morning, and like all mornings read my utterlyboring newsletter.

I click on the link to the story about The Bored Leg Cult (click 1). I follow the link to the Bored Leg Cult Photo Pool (click 2). I click on the Pool Members Link (click 3). I view the profile of Barry Price, which was on the first page of group members (click 4). Scroll down a bit to look at his Thailand 2005 Group (click 5). Then scroll down a bit more to find a picture of my good friend martin playing with some lizards (click 6).

Martin playing with some lizards

Martin is selling a 130kg c-3PO on ebay, c-3PO was played by Anthony Daniels who acted in Star Wars with Garrick Hagon who was a voice actor in Balto with Kevin Bacon.

Now I’ve forgotten what this blog entry was initially about… oh well, it’s a small interweb!

CSS/HTML Code Monkey Needed

Are you finding yourself sleeping too much at night? Are you making all of your deadlines and have time to spare? Are you spending a lot of time with your girlfriend but don’t have the cash to buy her that awesome Swarovski accessory. Do you do a lot of window shopping at thinkgeek? Are you wondering how you’re going to afford the next generation iPod? Did you participate in the recent “lets-make-slashdot-look-like-digg” contest, and are mourning the hours of CSS code that you wasted twiddling pixels and writing CSS only to be superceeded by the ugly ass css that is slashdot now? Do you spend hours tweaking the CSS on your beautiful blog, and then ruin your work of art by dropping in adsense ads to make some cash? Are you working in a boring day job and were just diagnosed with a terminal brain cloud?

If you answered yes to any of these questions and can handle some good old fashion no-nonsense CSS work (purely design implementation) email me at aaron-at-wormus.com.

A couple other important requirements:

  • basic PHP knowledge required
  • basic Smarty Templating knowledge required
  • able to use subversion (it ain’t rocket science)
  • strong CSS knowledge
  • knowledge of YUI library a plus
  • and dependable

Finally, we’re a small team and not in the position to pay “industry standard” prices, but the compensation is negotiable.
