I tried to use the PEAR installer the "right way", after not understanding it and hacking libraries in the "wrong way." But in #pear I was scolded for picking non-standard installation paths and made to feel that the PEAR experts really didn't want to help anyone who hadn't intuited a limitation (only using standard paths) that was not clear from the executable. So I decided I didn't like PEAR. Maybe I'm being small-minded. I do use individual PEAR libraries at times, which I usually install by hand if I can do so. But that experience was the difference between me being a reluctant consumer of certain code and me being an enthusiastic advocate of the idea behind PEAR.
