YouTube on Reuters & Moving out!

Reuters writes story about guy who films himself skiing down an escalator and then posts it on Youtube.

At T-4 you would think I would have better things to do… well, I pulled an all nighter last night and am about to take apart my desk.

Today is moving out day…

Killing a Toyota

The best car show ever… bbc put some of them up on youtube… This series they try to destroy a toyota pickup truck. Includes parking it on top of a 25 story building and then demolishing the building underneath it. Good watch :)

I recently tried to find any Top Gear DVDs in region 1 but couldn’t find anything. I just wish that BBC would create a channel just for top gear so that we can subscribe just to that. Kudos anyway!

MySQL restructuring data for a VIEW

Some code that I am reworking has a table that looks like this:

---------------------------
| uid |   key   |   val   |
---------------------------
| 1   | name    | Aaron   |
| 1   | age     | 28      |
| 1   | iq      | 50      |
| 2   | name    | John    |
| 2   | age     | 17      |
| 2   | iq      | 110     |
| 2   | geekfu  | 100     |
---------------------------

And I want to create a view that looks like this:

---------------------------------------
| uid |   name    | age | iq | geekfu |
---------------------------------------
| 1   | Aaron     | 28  | 50 | null   |
| 2   | John      | 17  | 110| 100    |
---------------------------------------

The PHP code I’m looking at is running through loops to organize the code, I am thinking there must be a simpler way. Any pointers to put start me in the right direction?

A Wormus Family Update – T minus 12 days

.. or why I haven’t replied to your emails in six months.

We break from our usual programming for a quick Wormus family update!

As you may or may not know (depending on how often you read the blog) we are in the process of making a move from Frankfurt, Germany to West Palm Beach, Florida. We have been planning this move since this time last year, and while it has taken longer, cost more, and been far more exhausting than we could have possibly imagined, we are now in the final stretch with only 12 days to go before the big move day.

I’ve been to WBP twice this year (totaling 5 and a half weeks) and if you have been keeping up to date with the Flickr feed you will have already seen photos of our new office, apartment and car.

We are currently in the process of tearing everything down and packing up our current place, while trying to keep on top of all the projects at work. Hopefully in the next 6 weeks this will all be done with and we’ll be somewhat settled in our new place.

Then I’ll have time to pick up on everything I’ve neglected.

The 300

Short version – Awesome cinematography, interesting action sequences and CGI – the demonization of the Persians and underlying political rhetoric make the movie hard to watch.

Must be a better way to do this

disclaimer: I have been up way too long!

I’m playing with my blog and put a banner on the top of my page that counts the days left to the Amazon launch of Scott Sigler’s new book Ancestor. Here’s the code that I came up with, makes me think there must be a better way.

<?php
$april1st = strtotime("April 1, 2007");
$now = time();
$days_remaining = 0;

while ($april1st > $now){
    $days_remaining++;
    $now = strtotime("+1 day", $now);
}

echo ($days_remaining) ? "$days_remaining days left till you can buy Ancestor Novel" :
                                   "Ancestor Novel is available NOW!";
?>

You can see the output on my blog. Is ther

Ancestor Bloggers

Gearing up for the Amazon.com release of the Ancestor Novel, Scott has convinced Jian and Rhumkorrf to start blogging!

This is a part of a larger guerrilla marketing campaign which focuses on making Ancestor an Amazon.com best seller on April 1st. So if you have a minute, throw a couple links on your blog, and make sure you’re in the virtual line to grab Ancestor as soon as it hits the virtual shelves!

Air Traffic Humor

Need to look at this when I have a break.

Allegedly the German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a short-tempered lot. They, it is alleged, not only expect one to know one’s gate parking location, but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (a Pan Am 747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurt ground control and a British Airways 747, call sign Speedbird 206.
Speedbird 206: “Frankfurt, Speedbird 206 clear of active runway.”
Ground: “Speedbird 206. Taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven.” The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop.
Ground: “Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?”
Speedbird 206: “Stand by, Ground, I’m looking up our gate location now.”
Ground (with quite arrogant impatience): “Speedbird 206, have you not been to Frankfurt before?”
Speedbird 206 (coolly): “Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark,… and I didn’t land.”

Poop for Peace 2007

It’s hard to believe that it’s PFP day again, seemed like we celebrated Poop for Peace 2006 last week.

Anyway, this email landed in my inbox announcing Pfp 07 on April 13th which will coincide with the publishing of a new book.

This April, just like every April, the world will come together to poop for peace. On April 13, with a grunt and a prayer, we will once again spread the gospel of fundamental oneness by embracing our universal number twoness.

This year’s Poop For Peace Day comes at an exciting time in PoopReport history: the long-awaited release of my first book. Entitled “Poop Culture: How America is Shaped by its Grossest National Product,” my book explores how humanity’s psychology and sociology is impacted by poop. It’s a funny book, of course, but it’s the product of three years of serious research and deep thought. It explores the influence of poop on the environment and its manifestations in art, commerce, and the media, all the while underscoring the basic themes of PoopReport and Poop For Peace Day: that we are all brothers and sisters struggling uniformly under the
tyranny of the bowel.

To help you not forget this important occasion, I’m posting a banner in the sidebar!
