Google Talk - First impressions

Google Talk

They say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free anytime, anywhere in the world.

Sounds like they really think they are doing something different, when in reality there is not much which is very special about google talk.

I tried out the official client, and the first thing that hit me was the sparse interface. What google has done is made the chat client as web-like as possible. In fact, you could probably whip up an AJAX client which is exactly identical in functionality. All links are underlined, and mcuh like web pages, there is nothing you will need to doubleclick on anything.

This works nicely with my theory that one morning we will wake up and find out that we won’t need anything more than firefox and google to be fully functional in our work and play.

A couple annoying things: No timestamps in the chat, no pasting of html… although links are made clickable. You can do some simple formatting using a *bold* and _italic_. Maybe there is a manual out there.

I tried the voice chat, it worked nicely. I only chatted with one person, so can’t say that it’s better than skype at this point, my one call was certainly no better than some chats I have had on skype which seemed to be totally flawless.

Google Talk is also tied into gmail so when you get a new email you’ll see a nice little message in the corner of your screen. Maybe I should start using my gmail some more.

Oh, well… I’m awormus@gmail.com add me :)

Finding warez using Google

Finding warez using Google | The days start here
Disclaimer: This post is not about encouraging you to download unlicensed software (reads: warez). Use at your own risk.

OK, so I was just talking with a friend and he was saying that the reason my google ads weren’t making me any money was despite my traffic (1700 Unique visitors yesterday), and fairly decent CTR, because of my “dogdy content” I was getting crap ads.

Oh well, I can’t help it! USE Linux, not Warez… an amusing article none-the-less.

Doctors uncover ‘Michelangelo code’

Brazilian doctors uncover ‘Michelangelo code’ - Yahoo! News

SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Two Brazilian doctors and amateur art lovers believe they have uncovered a secret lesson on human anatomy hidden by Renaissance artist Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling.

Essentially Michelangelo hid human organs throughout the Sistine Chapel. Some pretty interesting stuff, see the pictures here.

DHTML Lemmings

DHTML Lemmings%u2122 by crisp - Menu

OK, so between this and this I’m going to have a totally unproductive weekend.

Playing lemmings again was a total blast from the past! Like when I replayed all the Sokoban and Emerald Mine levels with Rocks ‘n Diamonds it is really amazing how you hardly remember playing the game, but then you rmember exactly how to solve each level. Great Stuff.

Dr. Mayes’ Web Pages

Index to Dr. Mayes’ Web Pages

Great reference source for all-things-statistical.

Some great quotes on the front page as well as this nice formula sheet, great spreadsheet humor, and this GREAT VBA Humor page.

I can’t help but pasting a couple:

Dim Wit, TheLights
Public Nudity As Graphic
Dim Julian As Boolean, King As String, Kong As Long
Actor = Val(Kilmer)

Opera CEO: Looses a bet, but saves a friend

THE 1 MILLION DOWNLOAD CHALLENGE - Opera Web Browser
So according to Situation report #3, Jon Tetzchner saved the life of his PR guy who was rowing along side him. What a hero! Not only was Jon able to pull Eskil to safety but those environmentally friendly norweigens also pulled the inflatable raft to safty as well, so as not to polute our environment.

This unfortunate event ended Jon’s quest to swim to the US.

Blog Aggregation and Spam

I’m getting really tired of sites which are aggregating aggregators, just to generate content for their own site and spamming the internet with copyrighted content.

Artima is borderline, they grab the content of your feed and put it in their “forums”, put google ads on your content, without even the decency to host images themselves. At least you sign up and allow them to do it.

I just bumped into this post on Livejournal and it prompted this complaint.

My (non-lj) blog entries are being hosted on LJ via the syndicated planet_php Feed.

I allow planet-php.net to syndicate my content, as part of their front page news, but cannot allow a third party site to create individual pages which contain nothing other than the content from my blog.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/planet_php/23541.html

I understand that you may be syndicating the content for your users ease-of-use and if this is the case then add appropriate meta tags to prevent my content being listed on google and other search engines.

Beautiful Drupal Site

Round Two

Now isn’t that just the most georgous Drupal site you’ve ever seen? I’m very impressed with the colors as well.

The logo is just a little too Skype-like, but other than that it is a feast for the eyes!

Lightcap on FreeBSD PHP5 Port

This one is waiting for approval on bash

<lightcap> thats moronic.
<lightcap> either change the configs, or don’t…and if you’re going to do it haphazardly, at least output to stdout that not *everything* is updated.
<lightcap> I wish my blog was up…I’d rant like a mofo right now.

Wobbly Windows in Gnome

Seth Nickell - Design Fu : xshots

You gotta watch the movies… pretty neat effect, the only purpose I can see is to convince your boss you need a new graphics card for your “work”…

I guess there are worse things you can do with your time than coding eyecandy… /me wonders how much time will be lost from now on by people watching the pretty windows.
