My standard tactic is to establish a broad base of SEO, if you’re promoting 1 site create 5 or 10 which support it span as large an area of internet interests as possible create the web hosting blog, the web hosting knowledge base, web hosting tips, webhosting resource site best is not to keep them on the same server, but try and scatter them around as much as possible.
For instance the blog can go on blogger.com get a bit of webspace on other servers for other sites and then grow each site using real data so that each will be unique and stand on its own then promote them all and use the network to funnel traffic and links to your main site you’ll also have to spend a bit of money to get good linkage
There are plenty of smallish pr6 sites who would accept $15/month for a link or something like that... you just need to hunt them down try to get as many local links as possible, other canadian sites... also target google.ca. Get listed in local directories, get linked on local sites.
Make sure your site does RSS and then submit the feeds to all the news and blog aggregators. And then produce good content.
Podcast sites make good advertising venues. Go to places like www.podcastalley.com search for your keywords and find a lot of related sites each of those has high pr, and targetted keywords and would be gold to get links from. Podcasters think they are radio dj’s so they have this majorly inflated ego so tell them you liked the show and would like to support the site by advertisign for $15/month for a text link :)
Obviously get the site(s) up as soon as possible so that it has a chance to get out of the Google Sandbox before you start your campaign.
